How US and EU Shoe Sizes Relate
The US sizing system (Brannock) measures in inches and subtracts a fixed offset, while the European system (Paris Point) measures in centimeters and multiplies by 1.5. Because the two systems use different units and formulas, there is no single number you can add or subtract to convert — you need to go through foot length as an intermediate step.
The formula chain is: foot length (inches) = (US size + offset) ÷ 3, then convert to centimeters, then EU = 1.5 × foot length (cm) + 2. Our converter handles this automatically.

Worked Examples
- US Men's 9 → EU 41: foot = (9+22)÷3 = 10.3 in = 26.2 cm. EU = 1.5 × 26.2 + 2 = 41.
- US Women's 7 → EU 38: foot = (7+21)÷3 = 9.3 in = 23.7 cm. EU = 38.
- US Men's 12 → EU 45: foot = 28.8 cm. EU = 45.
- US Women's 10 → EU 41: foot = 26.2 cm. EU = 41.
Common Mistakes
- Adding a flat number: Some guides say “add 30 to your US size.” This is a rough shortcut that works only around US Men's 8–9. Outside that range it drifts by a full size or more.
- Ignoring men's vs. women's: US Men's 10 and US Women's 10 are different foot lengths, so they map to different EU sizes (43 vs. 41).
- Assuming EU sizes have halves: EU sizes are whole numbers only. If the formula output falls between two sizes, round to the nearest whole number.
