🗺️ Five Systems, Zero Standardization

The global footwear industry operates on at least five major sizing systems, each with its own logic, history, and mathematical foundation:

• US / Canada (Brannock) — Invented in 1927 by Charles Brannock, this system measures foot length in inches and uses the formula: size = 3 × length_in_inches − 22 (for men). Women's sizes add 1. Still the dominant system in North America.
• UK / India (British) — Similar to Brannock but with a different zero point. Roughly 1 size smaller than US: UK ≈ US − 1 (for men). Widely used in the UK, India, Australia, and South Africa.
• Europe (Paris Point) — Originating in 19th-century France, one Paris Point equals ⅔ of a centimeter. The formula: EU = 1.5 × (foot_cm + 1.5). Used across the EU, Russia, and much of the Middle East.
• Japan / Mexico (Mondopoint) — The most rational system: shoe size simply equals foot length in centimeters, rounded to the nearest 0.5. A 27 cm foot = size 27. Used in Japan, Mexico, and parts of East Asia.
• China (GB/T 3294) — Based on the Chinese national standard: CN = 2 × foot_cm − 10. The world's largest footwear market by volume uses this system domestically.

Each system evolved independently, rooted in different measurement traditions (inches vs. centimeters), different zero points, and different rounding conventions. There is no official, universally agreed-upon conversion table. This is precisely why a formula-based converter — one that calculates from the underlying math rather than relying on approximate lookup tables — is so important.
